What is a warrant canary?
A warrant canary is a method by which a service provider can inform users that it has NOT been served with a secret government subpoena. If the canary disappears or stops being updated, users can infer that the provider may have received such an order.
The concept originates from coal mining, where canaries were used to detect toxic gases. In the context of privacy services, if the canary "dies" (the statement is removed or not updated), it signals that something has changed -- even if the provider is legally prohibited from saying what.
While we cannot legally confirm receipt of a secret order, we CAN confirm its absence. The presence of this page, updated monthly, is our confirmation that we remain free from government interference.
📅Update Schedule: This page is updated on or before the 20th of each month.
